Property Tax Postponement Program Application Deadline February 12

(SANTA ANA, Calif.)  Orange County Treasurer Shari Freidenrich is notifying homeowners that the deadline to submit Property Tax Postponement Program (PTP) applications to the California State Controller’s Office is February 12, 2024. The PTP allows qualified homeowners to postpone payment of current year property taxes on their primary residence and avoid delinquency penalties during times of financial hardship.

“Orange County senior citizens and the disabled are vulnerable to the effects of persistent inflation especially if they are on fixed incomes,” said Orange County Treasurer Shari L. Freidenrich. “The Property Tax Postponement Program is a tool to aid those who qualify, and I encourage those who may benefit from the PTP to consider applying.”

Interested applicants will need to submit a copy of their current year property tax bill along with documents proving they meet all necessary criteria. Orange County homeowners can download their current tax bill online at octreasurer.gov/octaxbill or by scanning the QR code below and entering either their APN or property address. To qualify, a homeowner must meet all the following criteria:

  • Own and occupy the home as their primary residence
  • Be at least 62 years of age, or blind or disabled
  • Have a household income of $51,762 or less
  • Have at least 40 percent equity in the property
  • Not have a reverse mortgage on the property
  • Can have delinquent prior year taxes (except for mobile homes)

A five percent interest rate will be charged for taxes postponed under the PTP. This deadline may be extended, depending on the number of applications received. If this year’s property taxes have already been paid, you will receive a refund. Eligible applicants who have previously utilized the program are not automatically enrolled each subsequent year, and will need to reapply if they wish to continue participation in the PTP.

Full details of the PTP can be found at the California State Controller’s Office website or by calling 800-952-5661. Applications can be downloaded online and must be submitted by February 12. The program is available on a first come, first served basis. Qualified homeowners are encouraged to apply promptly, as funding is limited.
